BIOGRAPHY

Sensitive, technical, highly musical drummer Uirá Nogueira de Barros Cairo began his professional career at the age of 16 playing in a Bahia rhythms band in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil. He started playing drums at the age of nine. His first tutor was drummer Zeca Metal, who taught him the first Rock’n Roll beats. In 1995 he moved to Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais state capital, where he studied with José Luiz, André "Limão", Jean Dolabella, Mário Castelo, Leo Píres among others, playing in the music scene of Minas Gerais for five years. He started his teaching career in BH, in addition to playing in Samba, Rock'n Roll and Pop Rock bands of the city.

 

When in Salvador, he graduated in Music from Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in 2006 and then moved to London, where he specialized in drums at Drumtech School (current BIMM Institute). For five years he played in the Brazilian and English musical scenes with artists from various parts of the world such as Saravah Soul band, singer Carlos Lyra, composer and singer Marcos Valle and Geraldo Azevedo. During this time, he had the opportunity to perform at renowned London music venues such as Ronny Scott's, Jazz Cafe Camden and Charley Wrights.

 

Upon returning to Brazil, he began teaching at the Federal University of Bahia. Currently a music teacher on the Popular Music course at the UFBA School of Music (EMUS), Uirá is principally responsible for teaching Drums. He has dedicated himself to teaching Brazilian rhythms such as Samba, Baião, Frevo, Maracatu and Samba-Reggae. In addition to drums, he teaches Music Technology and coordinates the EMUS's Drums Workshop of one of the school's extension projects.

 

Uirá earned his Master of Music Education from UFBA in 2015 with the theme "Interactions in Relationships of Drums Teaching and Learning in Groups”, having coordinated the Popular Music Course at the university for two years. Still in the educational area, he also runs Uirá Nogueira Drums Course, which is now in its fourth year.
